Acupuncture Attempts to Balance the Flow of the ChiAcupuncture is an ancient medical art that has its roots planted in China. Many authorities believe that acupuncture is at least 5,000 - 7,000 years old. Acupuncture attempts to balance the flow of the chi (pronounced chee), or life force, in the body.Like many other alternative therapies, acupuncture focuses on harmonizing the body, mind, and spirit so that our body's natural healing powers can work effectively. As with many other alternative therapies, acupuncture differs from modern technology in that it treats each person as an individual, assessing the symptoms they are experiencing, and giving an assessment based on what has been discovered. How Does Acupuncture Work? Acupuncture points are believed to be gateways that house the energy channels (known as meridians) through which Chi flows. Once the acupuncturist has tapped into this gateway using needles, they can correct many imbalances. In all, there are 365 points on the main meridian and hundreds of others on the secondary meridan. Every meridian is associated with an organ. Even if the organ has been removed, the meridian still exists. Your First Acupuncture Visit Your first visit to the acupuncturist will be a thorough diagnostic process. You might receive a pulse and tongue examination. You can expect to receive extensive questions about your lifestyle, physical health, and symptoms you might be experiencing. Your acupuncturist will most likely want to check out acupuncture points on the spine and stomach. Treatment Your acupuncturist will use very fine needles and insert them at the meridian points. The needles are sterilized before they are inserted. The depth and angle at which they are inserted will vary, depending on the location on the body and the wanted effect. The needles are left in the meridan points from a few seconds to many minutes. However, the normal amount of time is fifteen to twenty minutes. You shouldnt feel any pain during the process. Depending on the desired effect, you might experience different reactions. Some people feel drowsy or relaxed, and others leave their acupuncturist highly energized. Those who have had this treatment usually experience the benefits a few days after it is over, once the Chi has had a chance to adjust. If your treatment was intended for an acute pain like a migraine, you should feel better immediately. Is Acupuncture Safe? If it is performed by a qualified acupuncturist, the answer is yes. Acupuncture cannot be learned in a short time. In China, Acupuncture is a five-year full time study program and two of those years are devoted to herbalism. In Western countries, it is a three-year full time program. Acupuncture, like many other alternative therapies, needs professional consultation before it can be administered. And like many natural healing remedies, it can be used in conjunction with a good diet, exercise, and other external therapies.
