Chiropractic Medicine - History, Treatment, and BenefitsChiropractic is an alternative medical treatment that takes a different approach than conventional medicine. It relies on the body's natural ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic care focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system and the effects of these conditions on general health.Chiropractic History Chiropractic is one of the oldest healing practices. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates discussed spinal manipulation and its potential benefits. The word Chiropractic is actually derived from two Greek words cheiros and praktikos which together means done by hand. Daniel David Palmer founded the modern Chiropractic movement. It all began in 1895 when he adjusted the spine of one of his clients named Harvey Lillard. Reputedly, Harveys seventeen years of deafness was suddenly cured. Daniel Palmer named this new practice chiropractic and opened his own chiropractic school in 1910. His belief was that when the spine is wholly aligned, there is a free flow of energy which courses to every cell and organ in the body. This enables the body's natural power to work effectively and manage normal body functions. Chiropractic Benefits Chiropractic care has been used to help people of all ages and individuals seek chiropractic treatment for a variety of reasons. Many have reported relief from a numerous conditions such as whiplash, lumbar, thoracic, and cervical back pain, poor posture, constipation, and sinus trouble. On a personal note, a few friends I've known who have had lower back injuries and have used the services of a chiropractor. Although initially skeptical about this type of treatment, they reported relief from the lower back pain they were experiencing. Causes of Spinal And Neck Alignment Problems The spine can be compromised due to a variety of reasons. Poor posture, emotional stress, sports injuries, work and traffic accidents, degenerative processes, and nutritional deficiencies are just a few things that can cause spinal and neck problems. Chiropractors believe that when the proper care of the spine is neglected, the body becomes susceptible to disease and disorders. Education In the USA, a chiropractor would have completed three years of undergraduate education before they were accepted into a Chiropractoric school of Medicine. Once accepted into a school of chiropractic, they must complete between four to five years of advanced study. Upon completion, a chiropractor may otain a license from the state in which they intend to practice. Every state recognizes chiropractic as a form of treatment and provides licensure. What To Expect During Your Initial Visit At your first chiropractic appointment, you will receive a thorough examination of your spine along with a history of your general health. Sometimes a diagnostic X-ray may be needed to determine the precise location of the spinal nerve damage. Chiropractic Treatment Your chiropractor will put their hands over your misaligned vertebrae and will shift it back to its natural position. After your initial diagnostic session, a series of treatments will be conducted. The time needed will vary, depending on your ailment. The diagnostic visits usually lasts between twenty to forty-five minutes. The treatment sessions usually last between ten to twenty minutes. Is Chiropractic Treatment Safe? In Canada it is estimated that, in a ten-year period, Chiropractors perform over 134 million neck alignments. There have only been 23 reports of stroke possibly attributed to such alignments. The occurrence is extremely low and cannot be matched by other medical treatments. Do Your Research If you are considering chiropractic care, talk with your family, friends, health care provider, or acquaintances. You could also consult with your local chiropractic association. Also, during your initial appointment, ask your chiropractor a lot of questions and take advantage of the information that is available at their office. Listen to the recommendations that are given for exercise, posture, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
