Alternative Medicine and Fibromyalgia, Part 3

It is important to remember that the origins of fibromyalgia are still largely a mystery in the medical community. No prescription drug, alternative therapy, or supplement will cure this condition, and because this illness presents such a wide variety of symptoms, each patient must work to find the treatment program that works best for them. The following natural alternatives have been reported to help treat particular symptoms associated with FMS—at this point there is no definitive scientific study to recommend any course of treatment, and evidence supporting the usage of natural supplements for treatment of FMS is largely anecdotal.

Fibromyalgia syndrome is thought to cause a buildup of damaging toxins in bodily tissue, particularly in the muscles. In addition to a compromised myofascial structure that inhibits the release of toxins from the body, FMS is often accompanied by Leaky Gut Syndrome, a condition in which small intestine allows too many toxins to pass into the body, triggering inflammation and interfering with the production of serotonin. Nutrients that provide powerful antioxidant protection, such as coenzyme Q10, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin E, garlic and grapeseed extracts, and ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) bring more oxygen to muscle cells when they’re under stress and could help protect cells from damage caused by free-radicals and environmental toxins. Chlorella, a green algae “superfood” that is packed with a variety of antioxidant nutrients, vitamins, and proteins, was found to significantly relieve FMS symptoms in some individuals. Supplements that enhance liver function, or extracts that promote liver detoxification, may help improve FMS symptoms. Herbs such as milk thistle (Silybum marianum), dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) help improve liver function and protect FMS patients from toxic buildup in the liver, muscles, and all cells throughout the body.

FMS patients also often experience poor circulation, which may be caused by the persistent constriction of blood vessels associated with a constant state of “fight or flight.” Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) omega-3 and omega-6 may help treat the poor circulation that causes cold spots, skin discoloration, and areas of numbness and tingling. Fish oil supplements and flaxseed oil supplements provide an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have also been found to help inhibit the action of the prostaglandins that cause rheumatoid.inflammation. Evening primrose oil, borage, and black currant are excellent sources of the omega-6 fatty acid, gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), and are often used to make supplements. GLA helps keep the skin supple, and may relieve PMS symptoms, which are known to trigger fibromyalgia flares in some women.
