Alternative Medicine and Lyme Disease, Part 4

Those with Lyme disease may also find temporary relief from painful inflammation through topical application of salves with anesthetic or anti-inflammatory properties. The warming sensation that results from massage with peppermint oil, tea tree oil, camphor oil, and Cayenne (Capsicum) creams can help relieve pain and boost circulation to tender muscles. Such creams work because they act as counterirritants, which distract the brain from the pain signals that other nerves are sending. (When using these creams it is important to avoid exposure to mucous membranes and eyes, and wash hands after application.)

Lyme disease is a painful, often misdiagnosed condition. However, it is a highly curable disease when it is diagnosed in its initial stage and treated with antibiotics. The best course of action if you suspect you have this condition is to seek immediate treatment from a qualified physician.

However, keep in mind that combining natural supplements with prescribed medications may increase the effectiveness of prescription medications, while helping to reduce painful symptoms and speed the recovery process. At the very least, patients taking powerful doses of antibiotics for treatment of Lyme disease should consider taking probiotic supplements such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or Bifidobacterium bifidum, which help to replenish the beneficial bacteria that are killed off by these medications and thus reduces the risk of developing a yeast infection.

Taking natural supplements is an excellent way to promote overall good health, and may be especially beneficial to those in the advanced stages of Lyme disease, when the immune system is most stressed and the internal organs, joints, and central nervous system are at the greatest risk of damage. However, in all cases, a consultation with your treating physician is recommended prior to embarking on a nutritional supplementation regimen. This is particularly advised if you are taking prescription medication.
