It may not be wise to use Supplements to Correct a Vitamin D Deficiency

According to recent reports, vitamin D deficiency may be part of a disease process rather than protection against disease. In the past, accepted medical practice was to supplement vitamin D in the case of vitamin D deficiency.

In a recent report, a professor at Australia’s Murdoch University School of Biological Medicine and Biotechnology indicated that vitamin D deficiency may be caused by disease, and ingested vitamin D may actually suppress the body’s ability to fight disease and infection. Consequently, taking vitamin D supplements may actually worsen disease rather than protect the body from disease.

The study also indicates that vitamin D may affect a lot more than healthy bones and nutrition. In fact, Vitamin D may actually have an affect upon the repression or copying of genes that are connected to diseases such as cancer or multiple sclerosis.

Additionally, the study indicated that vitamin D supplements taken even in normal amounts may hinder the body’s natural immunity thereby affecting its ability to fight infections.

Considering the findings of this study, we may be forced to re-evaluate the assumption that vitamin D deficiency causes disease, rather than being part of a disease process.

Across the board studies indicate that there is no simple cause and effect between vitamin D supplementation and disease, and that the current practice of supplementing vitamin D intake has not lessened the prevalence of chronic diseases such as heart disease and obesity.
