MSG - Monosodium GlutamateMonosodum Glutamate, also known as MSG, is a powdered flavor enhancer that is added to many processed foods. MSG looks like many other flavor enhancers, such as sugar and salt and while many think that MSG is specific to Chinese Food, it is also found in processed meats, vegetables and soups.Chemically, MSG is the sodium salt of the amino acid glutamic acid and is a form of glutamate created by a fermenting process using molasses, sugar beets, sugar cane or starch. There has been much controversy over whether MSG is safe to ingest resulting in MSG symptom complex, a term for the short-term reactions to MSG. These symptoms include sweating, headache, facial tightness and pressure, numbing and burning in or around the mouth, chest pain, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Because of this, the FDA requires that monosodium glutamate be listed in restaurant menus and on food labels. Points of Interest
