Phytonutrients

Phytonutrients are simply the organic nutrients that are found in plants. They are not currently known to be essential nutrients, such as vitamins, carbohydrates, fat, protein and minerals, but as scientists learn them more about them they are finding they have many beneficial properties.

Phytonutrients are currently being studied and are thought to protect cells, reverse nerve cell damage, and even reduce the risk of diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer. Basically, phytonutrients are antioxidants that protect the body from disease.

While there are numerous phytonutrients found in plants, the most common sources are isoflavones, flavonoids and carotenoids. To get a balanced amount of phytonutrients, it is important to eat a variety of colors when consuming fruits and vegetables. Broccoli, garlic, blueberries, soy, melons, sweet potatoes and tomatoes are all very high in phytonutrients.
