NeurotransmittersNeurotransmitters are chemicals that act as communicators between a neuron (nerve cell) and another cell. More simply, a neurotransmitter transmits information from a neuron. This transmission is made along a synapse, the intersection or bridge that separates one neuron from a nerve cell or muscle. There are more than 300 of these chemicals, including the more popular neurotransmitters: endorphins and serotonin. When these chemicals are transmitted they move from the brain to other parts of the body. Imbalances in neurotransmitters can cause depression and Parkinsons Disease. For most purposes, neurotransmitters are classified as amino acids, monoamines or peptides, though there are many different classifications. Points of Interest
