Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a syrupy, water soluble fluid that is created as a byproduct of carbohydrate metabolism. In other words, lactic acid is formed during the fermentation process, when sugar is broken down in the body for energy.

It was previously thought that lactic acid was simply a waste product responsible for the burning sensation when muscles were worked out.

Now it is thought to be a source of fuel for the muscles as they are being worked out. In its pure form, it is an odorless, colorless, thick liquid that is found in many fruits and wines, as well as molasses and sour milk. In its synthetic form, lactic acid is used as a preservative for food, beverages and pharmaceuticals.
