Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are a type of steroid-hormone-drug that mimic the hormone cortisol, a hormone that is naturally produced in the body by the adrenal gland to help the body handle infection, inflammation and immune response.

Corticosteroids are used to block substances that activate allergic and inflammatory actions. Corticosteroid drugs can be found in products to treat eye conditions, in inhalers for asthma, in creams and ointments for skin irritations and also in nasal sprays.

Corticosteroids have a very negative side effect of obstructing white blood cell functions, which can lead to increased vulnerability to infection.
