CarbohydrateCarbohydrates are organic compounds found in most foods that act as the main source of energy. Basically, the body breaks down these sugars (carbohydrates), absorbs them into the bloodstream and turns them into energy for the body. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are found in sugary candies, which have no vitamins and minerals, or fruit and milk, which offers nutrients and vitamins beyond carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are called starches and are found in bread, crackers, rice and pasta. When these items are refined they have been processed in such a way that removes the nutrients and fiber that should be present. It is important for the body to get enough natural, nutrient-filled carbohydrates as opposed to processed, white sugars. Points of Interest
