CaffeineCaffeine is a plant alkaloid and central nervous system stimulant. It is found naturally in tea leaves, coffee beans, kola nuts and cocoa beans, and is added to many foods, drinks and medicines.Caffeine is used to relieve drowsiness, increase alertness and improve mental clarity, but can also cause insomnia, nervousness, anxiety and hypertension. It is a diuretic, but is also thought to make it difficult to lose weight due to it stimulating insulin secretion, reducing serum glucose and increasing hunger. Caffeine can go by many names, depending upon the source which it is found in. When it is found in guarana it is called guaranine. Caffeine in yerba mate is called mateine and when it is found in tea it is called theine. Caffeine is metabolized in the liver and excreted through the kidney.
