Herbal Tinctures

A carrier oil is a base or vegetable oil that is used as a base oil to dilute essential oils to make them safe for direct skin application. In essence, these oils carry the scent onto the skin for aromatherapy.

There are many different carrier oils, from peanut, olive, walnut and wheat germ to apricot kernel, avacado and evening primrose. To be a true carrier oil, the oil must be cold-pressed, which means they can go rancid unless they have added vitamin E.

The most widely used carrier oils are sweet almond and grapeseed. Do not use mineral oil as a carrier oil; it is not a natural oil.
