Allium

Alliums, also known as flowering onions, are perennial bulbous plants with a wide variety of colorful flowers that produce chemicals giving them an onion or garlic taste. In most instances, allium is another word for onion. There are over 1,000 species of allium, from onions, leeks and chives, to shallots, wild onions and garlic.

A wide variety of allium can be found growing all over the United States. They are considered part of the Alliaceae family, though they were once considered part of Liliaceae family. While the most common alliums are edible plants, there are many other alliums and some are known as ‘ornamental onions’.
