In most instances, allium is another word for onion. There are over 1,000 species of allium, from onions, leeks and chives, to shallots, wild onions and garlic.A wide variety of allium can be found growing all over the United States. They are considered part of the Alliaceae family, though they were once considered part of Liliaceae family.
