AspartameAspartame is a non-saccharine, artificial sweetener. Commonly used in a wide variety of drinks and foods, most notably in diet soft drinks, Equal and NutraSweet, aspartame was created for diabetics and others in need of a sugar substitute.Over the years, the sweetener has had much controversy around its safety due to the fact that once it is processed in the small intestine, it breaks down into methanol and converts into formaldehyde in the body. Many studies have been conducted to prove the connection between aspartame and brains lesions, headaches, lymphoma and brain tumors. The results of the studies have been inconclusive and investigation is ongoing. Points of Interest
