Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a specific form of Arteriosclerosis resulting from atheromatous plaque building up within large and medium sized arteries. This build up of plaque causes damage to the artery and results in major health concerns.

Although some hardening of the arteries happens naturally as we age, Atherosclerosis is specifically contributed to by cellular waste build up, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, calcium deposits and fatty substances clogging the inner lining of an artery.

It is also thought that cigarette smoke and high blood pressure cause injury to the innermost layer of the artery wall. Atherosclerosis is a long, gradual process that can result in quite harmful affects, such as hemorrhaging, blood clots, heart attack and stroke.
