Stretch MarksStretch marks, also called striae distensae, are a result of scarring of the skin caused most commonly by rapid growth (usually during puberty or weight training), pregnancy or obesity. Stretch marks happen when the skin is stretched too quickly, resulting in reddish purple marks that turn to silver or white. The marks are caused by overstretching that doesnt allow the skin to produce enough collagen.Stretch marks appear on the middle layer of the skin, the dermis. They can appear anywhere on the body, but are more commonly found on the abdomen, buttocks, hips, arms, thighs and breasts where fatty tissue is more likely. Over 75% of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy. Though they do not pose any health risks at all, many people seek to remove them (if possible) by laser treatments, tummy tucks, dermabrasion, prescription retinoids, chemical peels, as well as lotions, creams, exercise and diet.
