Alternative Medicine, Nutrition, and Bladder Infection

Bladder Infections and kidney infections are known as urinary tract infections or UTI’s. Urine has many compounds and chemicals within its makeup, however urine contains no bacteria. Bladder infections occur when bacteria is introduced through the urethra into the urinary tract. Once in the urinary tract, the bacteria begin to multiply.

Urinary tract infections are most common among sexually active women, diabetics, and individuals with sickle cell anemia. The most common type of urinary tract infection is a bladder infection known as cystitis, and generally this infection can be easily cured with antibiotics.

Although there is no set common cause for a bladder infection, research has indicated that many bladder infections are the result of poor hygiene of the genital area, or the use of latex condoms, spermicides, or oral contraceptives. Some symptoms of a bladder infection include noturea, mild fever, burning sensation upon urination, pain above the pubic area, and blood or pus in the urine.

Some preventative measures for urinary tract infections are to avoid sugary foods, increase water intake, drink unsweetened cranberry juice, and the use of supplemental vitamin C. Additionally, some infections could be prevented by cleaning the genital area before and after sex. And for women more than men, urination within fifteen minutes of sexual activity helps prevent urinary tract infections.



A variety of sources indicate that the following micronutrients, supplements, and/or herbs may potentially be helpful for this condition. However, it may be wise to consult with your physician prior to taking nutritional supplements and this is certainly recommended for individuals with a diagnosed condition, particularly those who take prescribed medication.
