Alternative Medicine, Nutrition, and Bursitis

Bursitis is an inflammation of the small sacs of synovial fluid (bursa) near the junctures of tendons, muscles, and bones. Synovial fluid sacs make the painless motion of joints possible by providing a smooth interface on boney surfaces so that the tendons and muscles are able to move freely across the surface of bones.

When the bursa become inflamed due to repetitive joint movement or trauma, the result is known as bursitis. The most common areas affected by bursitis are the elbows and knees, however other areas such as the shoulders may also be affected.

Symptoms of bursitis might include inflammation, pain, redness, and swelling of the affected area; consequently, most bursitis sufferers tend to avoid movement of a painful joint. Although bursitis symptoms appear to be exacerbated by physical activity, bursitis sufferers must use the affected area to prevent painful joint impingements (inability to move the affected joints).

Treatment options for individuals with bursitis might include massage, physical therapy, pain medications, and hydrocortisone injections.

A variety of sources indicate that the following micronutrients, supplements, and/or herbs may potentially be helpful for this condition. However, it may be wise to consult with your physician prior to taking nutritional supplements and this is certainly recommended for individuals with a diagnosed condition, particularly those who take prescribed medication.
