Alternative Medicine, Nutrition, and SinusitisSinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which may be the result of a bacterial, viral, fungal, or environmental source, or may also result from an allergy or autoimmune condition.Sinusitis is often classified by duration of the infection; for example ,acute infections last less than four weeks, sub acute infections last four to twelve weeks, and chronic sinusitis is any infection lasting twelve weeks or more. Symptoms of both acute and chronic infections are very similar, so much so that acute and chronic sinus infections are often indistinguishable. Sinusitis symptoms might include nasal congestion, pain in teeth, facial fullness, headaches, fever, along with green or yellow nasal discharge. Acute sinusitis generally follows a viral upper respiratory infection; viral damaged tissues are infected with bacteria resulting in sinusitis. Over the counter treatments for sinusitis might involve the use of antihistamines and decongestants. If you visit your physician you may receive an antibiotic. Physicians, however, appear to be hesitant to prescribed antibiotics for acute sinusitis, and a recent study in Great Britain suggested that patients treated with antibiotics and corticosteriods proved to fare no better than with placebo treatments. Chronic sinusitis is often the result of dust, pollution, fungus or bacterium, and is often treated with antibiotics, anti fungal medications, nasal irrigations, and surgical interventions such as balloon sinuplasty. A variety of sources indicate that the following micronutrients, supplements, and/or herbs may potentially be helpful for this condition. However, it may be wise to consult with your physician prior to taking nutritional supplements and this is certainly recommended for individuals with a diagnosed condition, particularly those who take prescribed medication.
