QUANTITY OF FAT VERSUS QUALITY OF FAT ?Dieters, prospective dieters, and those who wish to embrace healthier eating habits often assume that a proper course to take is to reduce all fat from their meals. And this is an understandable assumption. Television and print advertising has pummeled the public for years with the message that fat consumption equals "unhealthy".However, as natural as this assumption may be, it may also be incorrect. A fifteen-year finnish involving 1,551 middle-aged males found the following: men whose dietary habits provided the most linoleic acid and polyunsaturated fat received substantially greater protection against heart disease than men who ate less fat in general. In fact, those whose diet gave them the most linoleic acid and polyunsaturated fat were sixty-two percent less likely to die as a result of cardiovascular disease as compared to the other men in the study.
