TYPE 2 DIABETES AND THE EFFECTS OF GETTING EXTRA MAGNESIUMCan getting additional magnesium in one's diet have any measurable effect on type-2 diabetes? According to the results of an 18-year study, there may be benefits to getting more of this particular dietary mineral. The Harvard research team that conducted the study found the following: those who consumed the most magnesium had a thirty percent lower risk of developing type II diabetes than those individuals who consumed the least amount of magnesium in their daily diet. According to one of the study researchers, low levels of magnesium can have the effect of lowering the body's insulin sensitivity. And, in fact, people with diabetes often have low levels of magnesium. How can you get more magnesium? You can choose to take dedicated magnesium supplements, a one-a-day type vitamin supplement that contains supplemental magnesium, or you can simply make an effort to consume foods that are known to contain this mineral, such as leafy green vegetables and nuts and grains.
