WHY SOME PEOPLE LIVE LONGER - THE LONGEVITY GENEIt has always been commonly accepted that getting routine physical activity, eating nutritiously, keeping stress levels low, and, in general, living life in sensible moderation can increase the odds of living longer. But what about centenarians, i.e. individuals who live to the remarkable age of 100 or older? After all, only one in ten thousand people reach the century mark. Is healthy living the key to the exceptional longevity of such individuals? All these factors may certainly play a role. However, the results of a study conducted at the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine indicate that genes play a sizable role. In this particular study, a longevity gene was found to have the ability to alter cholesterol particle size. By enlarging fatty cholesterol particles, the gene was shown to reduce occlusions (blockages) in blood vessels and, consequently, reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Obviously, not everyone possesses the longevity gene. However, the fact that centenarians are assisted by a gene that protects blood vessels against fatty buildup illustrates the value of a daily diet that de-emphasizes fat-laden, cholesterol rich foods.
