Are there risks associated with using alpha-carotene ?
For the vast majority of individuals, alpha-carotene will pose no risks. However, individuals with hypothyroidism may wish to avoid alpha-carotene supplements since this condition often
interferes with the body's ability to convert alpha-carotene to vitamin A.
Additionally, smokers may wish to avoid alpha-carotene supplements until more is known about the effects of carotenoids in these individuals. Though, according to some sources, alpha-carotene may be useful for protecting lung tissue against the effects of free radicals, some studies have, on the other hand, indicated that carotenoid supplements may actually increase lung cancer rates in smokers.
