What are the potential advantages of taking Superoxide Dismutase ?

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that reduces superoxide, the most common free radical in the body, which is toxic to living cells, into harmless components consisting of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Superoxide Dismutase provides antioxidant protection to every cell in the body, and is crucial to the formation of healthy skin cells.

Higher Superoxide Dismutase levels in the body may provide considerable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging advantages. SOD neutralizes the free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and precancerous cell changes, and researchers are currently studying its potential as an anti-aging treatment, since it is now known that Superoxide Dismutase levels drop while free radical levels increase as we age.

Superoxide Dismutase also helps the body use anti-oxidant nutrients zinc and manganese more effectively. There are two types of SOD: zinc (Cu/Zn) SOD and manganese (Mn) SOD. Both are needed to protect cells from free-radical damage; Cu/Zn SOD protects cellular cytoplasm while Mn SOD protects the mitochondria.
