Are there risks associated with using Superoxide Dismutase ?
There is a theory that increasing Superoxide Dismutase levels may cause hydrogen peroxide levels in the body to rise to a level that could damage the cells unless there is a corresponding increase in levels of glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme that helps the body eliminate hydrogen peroxide and other potentially damaging substances. If this theory is true, it means that having too much Superoxide Dismutase in your system could bring about the opposite of the intended effect, leaving the body more rather than less vulnerable to the oxidative damage that causes conditions like premature aging, senile dementia, and Alzheimer's disease.
