Are there risks associated with using beta-carotene ?
For the most part, there have been no toxic risks associated with beta-carotene in healthy individuals, although large dosages may cause urine or skin discoloration (an orange appearance).
However, beta-carotene supplements have been linked to higher rates of lung cancer in smokers. Additionally, very large amounts of beta-carotene could be toxic to anyone with liver damage, and has been linked to birth defects if consumed by women during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
