Can you get enough beta-carotene from food and dietary sources ?
Although beta-carotene is found in many fruits and vegetables (cantaloupes, pumpkins, carrots), few people today take in the suggested amount of beta-carotene from purely dietary sources.
For this reason, to achieve the optimal levels of antioxidant protection that may be afforded by beta-carotene, an individual may wish to consider using betacarotene supplements. In addition, alcohol, birth-control pills, cigarette smoke, some cholesterol drugs, and methotrexate (a drug used to treat arthritis, psoriasis, and cancer) block beta-carotene absorption in the body, and individuals using such substances may have an increased need for supplementation.
