What are the potential advantages of taking Selenium ?

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that works closely with vitamin E to provide the body with powerful antioxidant protection from the free radicals that contribute to the development of cancer, heart disease, and arthritis.

Selenium is an antioxidant that protects cells from free radical damage in two ways: It is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, which are important antioxidant enzymes, and it also helps the body manufacture it’s own natural antioxidant, glutathione. Studies have demonstrated the anti-cancer advantages that come with selenium use. In one study, participants taking selenium reduced their colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer mortality rates by 50 percent over 10 years. Selenium may also prevent or slow tumor growth by boosting immune cell activity and suppressing development of blood vessels to the tumor.

Taking selenium offers many other potential advantages. Selenium may help protect against heart disease by lowering levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol levels. Preliminary studies suggest that the antioxidant effects of selenium may also help treat rheumatoid arthritis and HIV/AIDS by helping to lower the body’s levels of free radicals.
