Are there risks associated with using Omega 3 fatty acids ?

Though omega 3 fatty acids are generally safe for the vast majority of individuals, there may be some risks for specific types of individuals. For instance, omega-3 fatty acid supplements may raise blood sugar or lower insulin production. Omega 3 fatty acids can also thin the blood and increase bleeding.

Due to these potential risks associated with omega 3 use, diabetics and anyone taking blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) should consult a physician before taking omega-3 supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids may also decrease the effectiveness of drugs used to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
