Vitamin B5 Pantothenic Acid Part 2

Further, regarding supplementation, there is a form of pantothenic acid called pantethine. The body doesn’t convert pantethine into coenzymes, and there is some evidence that adding this form of pantothenic acid to your system can help lower high cholesterol. Researchers are just beginning to explore pantothenic acid’s possible role in fighting high cholesterol.

Pantethine supplements are generally very safe, with no known serious side effects or overdose level. Vitamin B5, like all other B vitamins, is water-soluble—-excess amounts are not stored in the body.

However, those taking the drug levodopa to treat Parkinson’s disease should not, under any circumstances, take pantothenic acid supplements, as they cause this drug to stop working.

In addition, some people who took very large doses (10 to 20 grams a day) reported that this amount of pantothenic acid caused them to have diarrhea.

Lastly, there have been claims that pantothenic acid boosts immunity, slows aging, stops balding and gray hair, helps arthritis, cures allergies, and enhances athletic performance. But as with many micronutrients and their associated claims, it may take time to validate, or disprove, such assertions.
