PhytosterolsPhotosterols are both plants sterols (natural plant sterols mainly in vegetable oils) and plant stanols (hydrogenated compounds of plant sterols). They are a group of steroid alcohol phytochemicals that act much like cholesterol in the intestine to lower cholesterol absorption.Phytosterols are found naturally in healthy diets containing vegetable oils such as soybean, flaxseed, olive and coconut oils and can also be found in many foods from vegetables such as brussel sprouts, yams and cauliflower to fruits such as apples, bananas and oranges. There are many (over 40) plant sterols, but the most common are campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol. They can also be found as dietary supplements and food additives. Points of Interest
