Excitotoxins

Excitotoxins are compounds found in food that excite and over stimulate brain cells until they die; this condition is called excitotoxicity. Aspartame, monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrolyzed vegetable protein and MSG-like additives are all known as excitotoxins, or neurotoxins.

Many health professionals believe that these toxins, which are added to our food supply to sweeten and flavor foods, could lead to Alzeheimer’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological diseases. Aspartame is a very controversial food containing excitotoxins that can be found as a sweetener in Nutrasweet, Equal and other ‘diet’ products. MSG and hydrolyzed vegetable protein are used in various foods to enhance the flavor.

It is also thought that excitotoxins cause seizures, infections, abnormal neural development and migraines.
