Simple Sugars

Simple sugars are also known as simple carbohydrates. These simple sugars are ‘empty’ carbohydrates because they contain very little minerals or vitamins and contain refined sugars. They are broken down and digested very rapidly and all of the sugar goes directly to your bloodstream, resulting in a rush of energy that lasts for a very short time.

Simple sugars are very sweet and high on the glycemic index. They are ideal for quick energy, but often result in a spike in blood sugar, followed by hunger and a drop in energy.

Simple sugars are found in glucose, fructose, fruit sugar, sucrose, table sugar, lactose and milk sugar. When you eat things like fruit, milk, yogurt, molasses, honey, maple syrup or white and brown sugar, you are consuming simple sugars/carbohydrates. For health, eat simple sugars in moderation.
